Twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed by a global pandemic caused by a mutated Cordyceps fungus, hardened survivor Joel is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey across the United States as the two depend on each other for survival against infected creatures and ruthless human survivors. Along the way, Joel and Ellie confront devastating losses, terrifying threats, and moments of unexpected humanity. Joel must grapple with ghosts from his past while protecting Ellie, who carries a mysterious immunity to the infection that could potentially save mankind. Their bond deepens into a surrogate father-daughter relationship, forcing them to make impossible choices where the line between survival and morality blurs completely.

Set in the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s, the series focuses on the initial investigation into the disappearance of a young boy named Will Byers amidst supernatural events occurring in the town, including the appearance of a psychokinetic girl who helps Will's friends in their search.
