Alfred Abel was a prominent German actor, film director, and producer of the silent and early sound film eras. Best known internationally for his iconic portrayal of the master of Metropolis, Joh Fredersen, in Fritz Lang's 1927 science fiction masterpiece Metropolis, Abel enjoyed a prolific career on both stage and screen. He established his own production company, Alfred Abel-Film, contributing significantly to the golden age of Weimar cinema.
Beginning his theatrical career under legendary directors like Max Reinhardt, Abel transitioned smoothly into film around 1913. He quickly became one of the most sought-after leading men in German cinema, frequently collaborating with renowned directors such as F.W. Murnau, Ernst Lubitsch, and Arthur Robison. His distinguished appearance and versatile acting range allowed him to seamlessly transition between romantic leads, sophisticated villains, and authoritative figures until his untimely death in 1937.
