Set in 1947, the series follows Mildred Ratched, a dedicated nurse who arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments on the human mind have begun. On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, her stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born. As Mildred navigates the complex political landscape of the hospital and its power-hungry director, Dr. Richard Hanover, she becomes entangled in a web of manipulation, murder, and personal vendettas. The series serves as an origin story for the iconic antagonist from Ken Kesey's 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,' exploring the psychological trauma and systemic corruption that shaped her into the cold, calculating figure audiences recognize.
