Rectify follows Daniel Holden as he returns home to his small Georgia town after serving nearly two decades on death row. Released due to DNA evidence that casts doubt on his original conviction for the rape and murder of his teenage girlfriend, Hanna Dean, Daniel must attempt to reintegrate into a society that has largely moved on and a family that is deeply fractured. As Daniel struggles to adjust to the sensory overload and emotional complexities of the modern world, the local community remains bitterly divided over his innocence. The town's senator and former prosecutor, Amantha Holden's stepbrother Ted Jr., and the local sheriff who originally put Daniel away all grapple with his sudden return. The series explores themes of trauma, faith, forgiveness, and the agonizingly slow process of healing.
After nearly 20 years on death row, Daniel Holden is released under suspicious circumstances and returns to his family in Georgia, struggling to adjust to a changed world.
Daniel's fragile freedom is threatened as the local community reacts with hostility, and the district attorney pushes to reopen the case, forcing Daniel to contemplate a plea deal.
As legal pressures mount and a plea bargain looms, Daniel faces the reality of permanent exile from his home, while his family deals with their own personal crises.
Living in exile in Nashville, Daniel attempts to build a rudimentary life for himself while the Holden-Talbot family back in Georgia struggles to heal in his absence.
