Based on a popular novel, The Red Sleeve is a historical drama that tells the record of an imperial court romance between King Jeongjo of Joseon and the royal court lady Seong Deok-im. Deok-im is a fiercely independent and intelligent woman who cherishes her freedom and wants to make her own choices in a rigid palace system where women have very little agency. Crown Prince Yi San, burdened by the heavy duties of his future crown and the trauma of his father's tragic death, falls deeply in love with her. As Yi San ascends the throne, his love for Deok-im grows, but so do the political pressures and demands of the royal court. He repeatedly asks her to become his concubine, but Deok-im hesitates, knowing that entering the inner court as a royal consort means sacrificing her identity and personal freedom. The series beautifully and heartbreakingly explores themes of duty versus desire, the constraints of royal life, and a profound, enduring love that transcends social hierarchy.
