Set during the tumultuous twilight years of the Goryeo Dynasty, 'Shin Don' chronicles the dramatic life and political upheaval sparked by its eponymous historical figure. Born to a lowly temple slave, Shin Don rises through Buddhist monastic ranks to become the chief advisor and spiritual mentor to King Gongmin. Goryeo languishes under the stranglehold of the Mongol-led Yuan Dynasty and the suffocating dominance of corrupt pro-Yuan aristocrats. Seeing the suffering of the common people and the decay of royal authority, King Gongmin places his faith in Shin Don, seeking to enact sweeping structural reforms. Shin Don initiates radical agrarian and socio-political transformations, establishing offices to reclaim illegally seized lands and liberate enslaved commoners, directly striking at the foundation of noble power. However, his uncompromising methods, populist appeals, and growing arrogance make him mortal enemies among the conservative aristocracy, Neo-Confucian scholars, and royal ministers. The political struggle is further complicated by the tragic and sudden death of King Gongmin's beloved consort, Queen Noguk, which spirals the king into grief and erratic behavior, fracturing the alliance between the reformist monk and the monarch. As domestic resistance mounts and international pressures intensify from the rising Ming Dynasty, Shin Don's ambitious vision for a reformed society begins to unravel under accusations of treason, corruption, and overreach. The series presents an intricate, nuanced re-evaluation of Shin Don—long branded as a villain and heretic in mainstream history—depicting him instead as a tragic revolutionary who fought desperately against the systemic rot of a dying empire.
