Set in a mystical medieval world plagued by a mysterious and deadly pestilence, the pure and earnest young man Yoshihiko is chosen by the gods to become a brave hero. Armed with a sword pulled effortlessly from a sacred spot (and eventually an ever-growing array of ridiculous items), Yoshihiko embarks on a perilous quest to find the antidote, defeat the evil Demon King, and rescue his missing father and fellow villagers. Along the way, he is joined by a comical and eccentric band of companions: the dim-witted warrior Danjo, the magic-challenged wizard Murasaki, and the overly dramatic healer Medisa. Directed by Yuichi Fukuda and heavily inspired by the Dragon Quest video game franchise, the series is renowned for its deliberate low-budget aesthetic, cardboard monsters, blatant use of prop humor, and relentless meta-comedy. Characters frequently break the fourth wall, reference modern pop culture, and confront the financial and logistical limitations of their own television production.
