Tiger & Dragon is a critically acclaimed Japanese television drama that masterfully blends the traditional art of Rakugo (comic storytelling) with modern-day yakuza tropes. The story follows Toraji Yamazaki, a young yakuza member who discovers a passion for Rakugo after attempting to collect a debt from a master storyteller. He becomes the apprentice of the legendary Donraku Yanagiya, despite his rough background and lack of formal training. As Toraji navigates the dual worlds of the criminal underworld and the stage, he forms an unlikely bond with Kotora, a talented but disillusioned former Rakugo prodigy who has turned to a life of crime. The series explores themes of mentorship, redemption, and the preservation of cultural heritage, using the structure of classic Rakugo stories to mirror the personal conflicts and growth of its characters in contemporary Tokyo.
