3rd Rock from the Sun follows a group of four extraterrestrials who are sent to Earth on an expedition to study the human race. To blend in, they assume human forms and pose as a typical family living in the fictional town of Rutherford, Ohio. The group is led by High Commander Dick Solomon, who takes a position as a physics professor at a local university, while the others—Sally, Harry, and Tommy—navigate the complexities of human life, social hierarchies, and the confusing nature of human emotions. As the aliens attempt to understand the nuances of human behavior, they frequently misunderstand social cues, leading to comedic chaos and fish-out-of-water scenarios. Throughout the series, they grapple with their mission to observe humanity while simultaneously becoming increasingly attached to their human identities and the people around them, particularly Dick's colleague and love interest, Dr. Mary Albright.
