First airing in June 1971 in the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany), 'Polizeiruf 110' was conceived as a state-produced counterpart to West Germany's popular crime anthology 'Tatort'. Named after the emergency telephone number for the police in East Germany (and later unified Germany), the series focuses on police investigators solving a broad range of criminal cases, traditionally focusing on everyday social dilemmas, domestic conflicts, and moral crises rather than sensationalized violence. Following German reunification in 1990, 'Polizeiruf 110' survived the dissolution of the East German state television network DFF and was successfully integrated into the ARD public broadcasting network. Under the management of various regional public broadcasters—including MDR, RBB, NDR, and BR—the anthology expanded geographically, establishing distinctive investigative teams across Germany in cities like Rostock, Magdeburg, Munich, and the German-Polish border area. Distinguished by its psychological realism and sociological depth, the franchise allows individual regional teams to bring their unique local color, social commentary, and character dynamics to feature-length episodes. Over five decades after its premiere, the series remains one of the pillars of German television culture alongside 'Tatort', offering viewers compelling, reflective mysteries that mirror the evolving social landscape of modern Germany.
